Description
Chief city of Ahmadabad District, Bombay, 310 miles by rail from Bombay, and the cotton-mill capital of Gujarat.
Historical notes
Founded by Ahmad Shah in 1411 and taken by the British in 1818; its mills from the 1860s made it 'the Manchester of India', and Gandhi's Sabarmati ashram was established there in 1917. Colonial spelling Ahmadabad.
