Princely states
A princely state was a territory ruled by an Indian monarch under a subsidiary alliance with the British Crown. Such a state retained internal sovereignty while the Crown controlled its external relations and defence, usually through a Resident or an agency. It was therefore part of the Indian Empire but not part of British India in the statutory sense.
This distinction matters for research: a place in a princely state was not governed by British Indian law, its records were kept differently, and it does not appear in every British administrative series.
