District head-quarters whose town the Imperial Gazetteer records under Koil, 'usually called ALIGARH TOWN or TAHSIL in official correspondence'.
Historical notes
Its fort was stormed by Lake's army in 1803; the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College founded there by Sayyid Ahmad Khan in 1875 became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920.
