Description
Head-quarters of Ambala District and tahsil in the Punjab and one of the largest cantonments on the road to Simla.
Historical notes
Cantonment established in 1843 after the Sirhind cis-Sutlej states lapsed; the Ambala garrison's disaffection in May 1857 was closely watched by the Commander-in-Chief at Simla.
