Description
Head-quarters of Murshidabad District on the Bhagirathi, with a 1901 population of 24,397; the Gazetteer records it as chosen as a cantonment site.
Historical notes
Its cantonment saw the first stirrings of the 1857 mutiny in the 19th Bengal Native Infantry in February 1857. Modern spelling Baharampur; not to be confused with Berhampur in Orissa.
