Description
Capital of the Bombay Presidency and, per the Imperial Gazetteer, 'the principal seaport of Western India'.
Historical notes
Ceded to the English Crown in 1661 as part of Catherine of Braganza's dowry and leased to the East India Company in 1668; became the cotton and shipping capital of western India. Officially renamed Mumbai in 1995.
