Description
Head-quarters of Coimbatore taluk and district with a 1901 population of 53,080, on the plains below the Nilgiri Hills.
Historical notes
Ceded after the fall of Tipu Sultan in 1799; became a cotton-ginning and later textile-mill centre. The name is unchanged in modern use.
