Description
Head-quarters of Cuttack District and of the Orissa Division, on the delta where the Mahanadi throws off the Katjuri.
Historical notes
Taken from the Marathas in 1803 and the administrative capital of Orissa until Bhubaneswar replaced it in 1948; the Gazetteer glosses the name as Kataka, 'the fort'.
