Description
Former Mughal provincial capital and headquarters of Dacca District, made capital of the new province of Eastern Bengal and Assam in 1905.
Historical notes
Muslin-weaving centre that declined under Company rule, then revived as a provincial capital between the 1905 partition of Bengal and its 1911 revocation. Became capital of East Pakistan in 1947 and of Bangladesh in 1971.
