Description
Himalayan hill station and district head-quarters, described in the Imperial Gazetteer with Kalimpong, Kurseong and Siliguri as the chief trade centres of the district.
Historical notes
Granted by the Raja of Sikkim in 1835 and developed as a sanatorium, the summer seat of the Bengal government, and the centre of the tea industry; the Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway opened in 1881.
