Description
Divisional and district head-quarters on the Rapti in the eastern United Provinces, a major recruiting and emigration centre.
Historical notes
Chief source of indentured labour emigration from northern India and the site of the Chauri Chaura incident (1922) in its district, which prompted Gandhi to suspend non-cooperation.
