Description
Capital of Gwalior State; the Imperial Gazetteer records Gwalior City (population 119,433) as comprising Gwalior, Lashkar and Brigade, the largest town of the state.
Historical notes
Sindhia's fortress was retaken from Tantia Tope and the Rani of Jhansi's forces in June 1858, the last major action of the 1857 uprising; the fort was held by British troops until 1886.
