Description
Capital of the Nawabs of Oudh, annexed in 1856, and thereafter chief city of Oudh within the United Provinces.
Historical notes
Site of the five-month Siege of the Residency in 1857, one of the defining episodes of the uprising. Oudh was joined with the North-Western Provinces in 1877 and renamed the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh in 1902.
