Description
Ancient temple city on the Vaigai and district head-quarters; the Imperial Gazetteer notes 'Madura city was constituted a municipality in 1866'.
Historical notes
Nayak capital of the Tamil country and site of the Minakshi temple; the district passed to the Company with the Carnatic in 1801. Now Madurai.
