Description
Large British cantonment in Holkar territory near Indore; the Imperial Gazetteer lists it separately from Indore State's towns as 'the British cantonment of Mhow'.
Historical notes
Established after the Treaty of Mandsaur (1818) and headquarters of a division of the Bombay Army; its garrison mutinied in July 1857. Birthplace of B. R. Ambedkar; now officially Dr. Ambedkar Nagar.
