Description
Capital of the Central Provinces and former seat of the Bhonsle Marathas, lapsed to the British under the doctrine of lapse in 1853.
Historical notes
Chief cotton-market and textile-mill town of central India; the Empress Mills opened there in 1877. It remained the Central Provinces capital until 1947.
