Description
Nilgiri hill station about 7,500 feet above sea level, head-quarters of the Nilgiri District and summer seat of the Madras government.
Historical notes
Developed from the 1820s as 'Snooty Ooty', the hot-weather capital of the Madras Presidency; the Nilgiri Mountain Railway reached it in 1908. Now Udhagamandalam (Ooty).
