Description
Former Mon royal capital (Hanthawaddy) and district head-quarters, with a 1901 town population of 14,132 per the Imperial Gazetteer.
Historical notes
Gave its name to the province of Pegu annexed in 1852 after the Second Anglo-Burmese War; site of the Shwemawdaw pagoda. Now Bago.
