Description
Former Peshwa capital taken in 1818, later the monsoon (rainy-season) seat of the Bombay government and a major military station.
Historical notes
Headquarters of the Southern Command's Poona Division with the adjoining Kirkee cantonment; centre of late-19th-century Indian political and social reform (Deccan Education Society, Fergusson College). Officially spelled Pune since 1978.
