Description
Coastal pilgrimage town and district head-quarters in the Orissa Division, site of the temple of Jagannath and the Rath Jatra car festival.
Historical notes
The Jagannath temple's pilgrim tax and the British administration of the temple were recurring controversies of 19th-century Orissa; the district was ravaged by the Orissa famine of 1866.
