Description
District head-quarters between the Shevaroy and Kollaimalai hills, a weaving and later steel and magnesite centre.
Historical notes
Ceded after the fall of Seringapatam in 1799; Salem District included the Shevaroy hill coffee plantations. The name is unchanged.
