Description
Summer capital of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, on the Jhelum in the Vale of Kashmir.
Historical notes
The Dogra state was created by the Treaty of Amritsar (1846); a British Resident was posted from 1885 and Europeans were barred from owning land, giving rise to Srinagar's houseboats. Territory disputed since 1947.
