Description
Head-quarters of Tanjore District and taluk on the South Indian Railway, and the historic Maratha and Chola capital of the Cauvery delta.
Historical notes
Its Maratha rajas ceded the territory to the Company in 1799 and the raj lapsed in 1855; the Brihadisvara temple and the Saraswati Mahal Library date from Chola and Maratha rule. Now Thanjavur.
