Description
District headquarters on the Cauvery, described in the Imperial Gazetteer as the head-quarters of both the subdivision and the district, with a 1901 city population of 104,721.
Historical notes
Contested by the British and French in the Carnatic Wars of the 1740s-50s; later famous for cheroots and for the rock fort dominating the town. Now Tiruchirappalli.
