Description
Lake capital of Udaipur (Mewar) State, whose Sisodia rulers held the premier rank among the Rajput princes; the Gazetteer records its foundation in 1559.
Historical notes
Mewar accepted British protection in 1818 after Maratha and Pindari depredations; the Maharana was accorded the highest gun-salute rank in Rajputana.
