Description

Fort town on the Palar in North Arcot District, garrison of the Madras Army and place of confinement for Tipu Sultan's family.

Historical notes

The Vellore mutiny of July 1806, provoked by changes to sepoy dress regulations, was the first large-scale sepoy revolt against the Company.
